History of Naval Base San Diego
In 1918, the nearly 1000 acres which are now occupied by Naval Base San Diego used to be owned by a group of ship building companies named Emergency Fleet Corporation and Pacific Marine Construction. However, when the company started to lose money, it was able to return the land to the City of San Diego which was eventually acquired by the United States Navy. On February 23, 1922, the base was approved by General Order 78 which offically established the facility as a US destroyer base. In its first few year, the base expanded as it built repair facilities, radio and torpedo schools, and more shops. The base expanded during World War Two, adding more fleet training schools and preformed conversion, maintenance and battle damage repair to over 5100 ships. By the 1990s, Naval Base San Diego became the home port of the US Pacific Fleet. As it has had multiple names over the years, Naval Base San Diego is also called 32nd Street Naval Station by the local community, sailors, and veterans because of the location of its main entrance. The base is now the home port of 54 ships and is the workplace for 26,000 military and civilian workers.
