HILTON HEAD, S.C. — The wife of a Marine killed when a motorcycle and truck collided in 2012 will receive a $25,000 settlement from the driver at fault in the accident, also a Marine, according to court records.
Timi Branum, who was expecting her third child when 23-year-old Cameron Branum died Dec. 27, 2012, will receive the settlement from Tyshan Bentley's insurance coverage, according to court records filed Thursday.
Bentley, 24, was driving a pickup truck on Joe Frazier Road in northern Beaufort County when he ran off the shoulder, overcorrected and veered into oncoming traffic.
Branum, a company clerk at the Headquarters and Service Battalion at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, tried to avoid the truck on his motorcycle but was struck and killed.
After an investigation concluded in March, the S.C. Highway Patrol charged Bentley with driving on the wrong side of the road, Trooper Hannah Wimberly said. He was fined $237.50, according to court records.
Bentley is stationed at Parris Island, according to Cpl. Brady Wood of Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort. Attempts Friday to reach Bentley for comment were unsuccessful.
In the year since Cameron Branum's death, his father said he and Cameron's wife have accepted the accident and have forgiven.
