The Air Force Academy is investigating 40 freshmen for allegedly cheating on a Chemistry 101 lab report assignment.

In a March 3 release, the academy said those freshmen allegedly copied portions of a lab report from other students’ reports. The assignment was worth 50 of the class’ total 3,000 points. The 40 accused freshmen amount to 8 percent of the academy’s total freshman class.

“We are sorely disappointed in this extremely small segment of our 4,000-plus cadet population,” Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Michelle Johnson said in the release. “While we believe that the young men and women here will be forged — and forge themselves — into leaders of character for our Air Force and the nation, we also realize that not every one of our 4,000-plus cadets will meet the high standards we expect of them, and we will hold them accountable when they fail to live up to those high standards in accordance with the academy honor code.”
