A week after an ex-convict gained access to Naval Station Norfolk and killed a member of Navy security forces on Pier 1, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic tightened rules for base admittance and placed a gate sentry on leave.

Rear Adm. Dixon Smith, the head of the Navy region, ordered additional screening for all delivery drivers presenting the Transportation Worker Identification Credential, or TWIC, NRMA said in a press release Monday. These rules took effect last week after the shooting, the release said.
