History of Lackland Air Force Base
Lackland Air Force Base, named for Brigadier General Frank Lackland in 1947, actually began construction in 1941 when it was part of Kelly Field and home of the AAF Central Flying Training Command. This school trained cadets in mechanics, physics, advanced math, deflection shooting, and aeronautics before sent to primary flight schools. Later, during the Korean War, the base expanded to 28 squadrons. Jumping to the modern era, the base has expanded again with the closure of adjacent Kelly AFB and thus received a flight mission. In the winter of 2009, it was decided to combine Lackland AFB with Randolph AFB and Ft. Sam Houston/Camp Bullis. The combined base is now called Joint Base San Antonio. Lackland AFB is now composed of near 40,000 people: 14,000 active duty members; 5,000 DoD civilian employees; 21,000 contract employees and family members.
