Fort Jackson is extremely incorporated into the city of Columbia, South Carolina as it spends over

Columbia is the largest city in South Carolina and is also its capital with a population of over 130,000 and a metropolitan area population of near 750,000. Columbia has a diversified economy with major employers including South Carolina state government, the Palmetto Health hospital system, Blue Cross Blue Shield of SC, Palmetto GBA, and the University of South Carolina. The climate of Columbia is humid subtropical with 48 inches or precipitation a year, average summer temperatures in the 90s, and average winter temperatures right above freezing.

History of Fort Jackson


Named after Carolinian, United States Army General and former President Andrew Jackson, Fort Jackson originally began as Camp Jackson in 1917 which open for World War I. The camp was then shut down in 1922 but re-activated at the onset of the Second World War. The camp was again supposed to be abandoned in 1950 but remained open as the Korean was started. Now as the largest and most active Initial Entry Training Center in the U.S. Army, Fort Jackson trains half of all Soldiers and 70 percent of the women entering the Army each year. These recruits consist of 45,000 men and women annually. The now fort also contains other schools including the U.S. Army Soldier Support Institute, the Department of Defense Chaplain Center and School, and the Defense Academy for Credibility Assessment. It is also the main training facility for drill sergeants. Fort Jackson consists of over 52,000 acres, 1160 buildings, and over 100 ranges and training sites. It is home to 3,600 military personnel and their families.

Fort Jackson is home to two elementary schools which can be attended by kids that live on base. 
Students in grades 7-12 living on Fort Jackson attend Richland District Two Schools. 7th  and 8th graders attend Dent Middle School and 9th-12th graders attend Richland Northeast High School. Children of military personnel living off post are supported by primarily two school districts: Richland District 1 and Richland District 2. These two districts have 45 elementary schools, 15 middle schools, and 12 high schools. There are also 23 private schools. Columbia has many institutions of higher learning including University of Southern California, Allen University, Virginia College, and many others.

In Columbia, there are many parks, including Finlay Park (the region's most popular park), Memorial Park, Granby Park, Martin Luther King Jr. Park, and several others. Regular festivals include 
The South Carolina State Fair, The St. Patrick’s Day Festival, and the The Irmo Okra Strut just to name a few. There is also the Colonial Life Arena, Columbia's premiere arena and entertainment facility. Columbia was recently one of 30 communities named "America's Most Livable Communities" by the Washington-based non-profit Partners for Livable Communities for being a community that is developing itself in the creative economy.
