History of Fort Jackson
Named after Carolinian, United States Army General and former President Andrew Jackson, Fort Jackson originally began as Camp Jackson in 1917 which open for World War I. The camp was then shut down in 1922 but re-activated at the onset of the Second World War. The camp was again supposed to be abandoned in 1950 but remained open as the Korean was started. Now as the largest and most active Initial Entry Training Center in the U.S. Army, Fort Jackson trains half of all Soldiers and 70 percent of the women entering the Army each year. These recruits consist of 45,000 men and women annually. The now fort also contains other schools including the U.S. Army Soldier Support Institute, the Department of Defense Chaplain Center and School, and the Defense Academy for Credibility Assessment. It is also the main training facility for drill sergeants. Fort Jackson consists of over 52,000 acres, 1160 buildings, and over 100 ranges and training sites. It is home to 3,600 military personnel and their families.

Students in grades 7-12 living on Fort Jackson attend Richland District Two Schools. 7th and 8th graders attend Dent Middle School and 9th-12th graders attend Richland Northeast High School. Children of military personnel living off post are supported by primarily two school districts: Richland District 1 and Richland District 2. These two districts have 45 elementary schools, 15 middle schools, and 12 high schools. There are also 23 private schools.
