Maine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island since 2002 is officially in the Town of Port Royal, but is still heavily associated and said to be in the larger community of Beaufort, four miles or so to the north. History of MCRD Parris Island
Named after the island it rests on, MCRD Parris Island initially began training Marines in 1915, but its history reached back farther than this. Until the English took control of the region in the 17th century, the area had been under the rule of Spanish colonizers and French explorers. Then in 1715 Colonel Alexander Parris, treasurer of the South Carolina colony, purchased this land and it became home to British plantations. Plantations it remained until it was captured by Union forces in the civil war and it became a Navy coaling station. The buildings that were subsequently built up through the first World War now form the center of MCRD Parris Island.
From 1941 through 1945, 204,509 recruits were trained here. In early 1949, the Marine Corps opened a separate facility dedicated to the training of female recruits. Later, this command was designated the 4th Recruit Training Battalion and it now serves as the only battalion in the Corps for training female recruits, and is the only all-female unit in the Department of Defense. Now, 17,000-19,000 recruits are trained here very year in a 13-week process that transforms them into "the few and the proud."

The district contains 8 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, 4 high schools, and 1 charter school. There are also at least 6 private schools in the city and the surrounding region. There are three institutions of higher learning in the area: University of South Carolina Beaufort North Campus,Technical College of the Lowcountry Main Campus, and an office of Clemson University.

There are golf and beach vacations, history, water sports, and local arts and crafts. Major festivals and arts events include the Home Water Festival, a two-week event in the middle of July; and the Shrimp Festival which was selected as one of the Southeast Tourism Society's Top 20 Events. Beaufort is also only an hour away from the city of Savannah, Georgia.
