Naval Station Great Lakes, the 
United States Navy's Headquarters Command for training, is located near the Illinois-Wisconsin border, in the city of North Chicago. North Chicago is located in the greater Chicago metropolitan area and has a population (in 2010) of 32,574. Average temperatures in the winter hover around degrees while in the summer months, high 60s is the regular. There is never more than 5 inches of precipitation a month. At one time, Navy personnel were a big part of the city's night scene, but with the degeneration of the city's entertainment district, this has changed. Presently, it is the largest military installation in Illinois and the largest training center in the Navy.

History of 
Naval Station Great Lakes

Nicknamed "The Quarterdeck of the Navy" and "The Great Mistake," Naval Station Great Lakes was opened in 1911 and since then has had more than 3.5 million men and women pass though on their way to become Navy Sailors. Naval Station Great Lakes became the Navy's only basic training facility in 1994 and since then approximately 40,000 recruits pass through annually with around 15,000 recruits there at any time. There are also 13,000 students who attend the other schools on the base such as the Navy's technical training schools for surface warfare excellence supported by Training Support Center Great Lakes.

Naval Station Great Lakes has also been at the forefront of racial integration in the U.S. military with its first African-American recruit in 1942 and then in 1946, it graduated 12 African American officers. These twelve later became known as the "Golden Thirteen" and had a new Recruit In-Processing Center dedicated to them in 1987.

Currently there are 1,153 buildings situated on 1,628 acres and 50 miles of roadway to provide access to the base's facilities.

Schools in North Chicago, IL

The North Chicago Community Unit School District 187 serves students up through high school and services families that live on 
Naval Station Great Lakes. In fact one-third of the student in the district are families from the base. The surrounding county is also home over 100 private schools that accept students from all religious denominations. These schools vary widely, from highly structured to self-directed learning environments, from college prep to curriculum strong in artistic expression. Colleges in North Chicago include Rosalind Franklin University, Lake Forest College, and Chicago Medical School. However towards the south are more top schools including Northwestern and University of Chicago.

Attractions - What to do in North Chicago, IL

Depending on whether you are a city person or a more rural kind, there is plenty to do around 
Naval Station Great Lakes. Not too far to the north is Illinois Beach State Park, where there is boating, swimming, hiking, bicycling, camping, bird watching, and picnicking in the surrounding dune areas, wetlands, prairie, and black oak savanna. To the south is the city of Chicago, the third most populous city in the country, which offers sporting event, theater, and its nationally renowned deep-dish pizza.
