History of Schofield Barracks/Fort Shafter
Schofield Barracks are named after LTG John M. Schofield who was sent to the Hawaiian Islands in 1872 and recognized the benefit that a military base in Hawaii could bring to the defense of the United States; he suggested the founding of the base at Pearl Harbor. Schofiled Barracks is located at the foot of the Waianae mountain range on the island of Oahu in Hawaii and was founded in 1908 to provide mobile defense of Pearl Harbor and the entire island. As of 2010, it had a population of over 16,000.
Fort Shafter is named after MG William R. Shafter who led the US force into Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898. Construction began in 1905 and finished in 1907, opening as a senior army headquarters. For near a century, Fort Shafter has remained the Army headquarters for the Asia-Pacific region, commanding most Army forces in Asia-Pacific (except those in Korea) commanding, controlling, and supporting Army forces in the region.
Today there are 7,897 active duty, 11,686 family members and 8,172 civilians that consider Schofield Barracks/Fort Shafter home.
